How to Stay Healthy during the Monsoon Season

How to Stay Healthy during the Monsoon Season

Cambodia is a tropical country located in Southeast Asia near the equator with a hot and wet climate. The temperature usually ranges from 21 to 35 ℃ with two major seasons – dry season and rainy season (so-called the monsoon season). From the middle of May to early October, the monsoon winds bring heavy rains and humidity throughout the country. With these weather conditions, it is particularly favorable for a common tropical disease called “Influenza or Flu”. So, how to stay healthy during the monsoon season? Below are the top 7 tips you can try if you are annoyed by the flu or cold-like symptoms.

#1 Get enough sleep. Having not enough sleep makes your body weak and unable to fight against viruses. Thus, do not stay up late playing games, watching videos or chatting. Instead, having at least 6 to 8 hours of sleep will help you reduce the chances of getting flu or cold-like symptoms.

#2 Drink a lot of water. Drinking clean and warm water wakes your body’s temperature control system up and keeps your body healthy and hydrated. It is believed to also help improve your digestion, relieve stress and make you feel warmer; especially when you drink it first thing in the morning or before bed.

#3 Have more of a Vitamin C-rich diet such as orange juice, strawberries, kiwis and sprouts.

#4 Avoid junk food and alcohol. Junk foods, on the street especially, are often oily and contain various types of microorganisms which are harmful to your health. Being drunk often also makes your immune system weak and vulnerable to many diseases; especially influenza.

#5 Get your flu vaccine and avoid walking under the rain (bring your raincoat or umbrella). From the age of six months up, it is recommendable to have a yearly dose of the flu shot; especially during the monsoon season.

#6 Clean your hands often, wear a mask and keep distance from sick people.

#7 If you are sick or having flu-like symptoms, please wear your mask and visit the nearest clinic or doctor for proper medication and treatment.

These are the 7 tips among many if you wish to stay healthy during the monsoon season. Having flu or cold-like symptoms will distract you from your work and study. Follow the above mentioned tips and do some more exercise will keep yourself healthy and productive at work and at school.
