What Parents Need to Know about AI Tutor

Artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and education-specific platforms like Khan Academy's Khanmigo have arrived in students' lives faster than most schools or families have been able to think through the implications. The conversation is not simple. These tools are genuinely useful. They are also genuinely risky, depending entirely on how a student uses them.

Used well, AI tutors can do things that no classroom can: they are available at midnight, they explain the same concept seven different ways without frustration, they give immediate feedback on grammar and writing, and they can adapt to a student's pace. For a student in a rural province with limited access to qualified English teachers, a well-used AI tool could be a significant equaliser.

Used poorly, they do the thinking for students and thinking is the point of education. A student who asks an AI to write their essay has not practised writing. A student who asks an AI to explain why a particular argument works, then writes the essay themselves, has learned something.

For parents, the most useful approach is not to ban AI tools; that battle is already difficult and likely unwinnable, but to talk to children about how they are using them. Ask to see the conversation, not just the output. Encourage questions like "Why?" and "How do I improve this?" rather than "What is the answer?"
